The $10K Drag Shootout Final 10: Team Boddie/Dow Brothers Racecars

The Horsepower Wars $10K Shootout is a competition where teams square off to see who can build the fastest drag car in 10 days with only $3,000 in cash and $7,000 in Summit Racing credit. We’ve had applicants from ALL over the country vying to see who would make it into the final list. And that has now happened.

This interesting and innovative competition has been made possible by some of the leading companies in our industry: Royal Purple, Comp Cams, TCI Transmissions, Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels, E3 Spark Plugs, Fragola, Diablosport, Mahle Motorsports, DynaBatt, ProCharger, Weld Racing, ARP, BMR Suspension, QA1, and of course, Summit Racing.

Today, we reveal our seventh finalist for the Horsepower Wars $10K Shootout!

Team leader Russ Wullenwaber of RPM Motorsports

Team Name: Team Boddie/Dow Brothers Racecars
Driver: Jay Boddie
Hometown: Los Banos, California
Crew: Russ Wullenwaber, Cole Dow, Ben Boylan Jr., Cody Dow, Nick Stewart

Grudge racing superstar Jay Boddie headlines the Team Boddie and Dow Brothers Racecars squad out of California, which is headed up by diesel performance shop owner and fabricator Rus Wullenwaber of RPM Motorsports. Boddie, of course needs little introduction; he’s traversed the country competing in grudge and small-tire, heads-up races behind the wheel of his familiar Chevrolet Nova. He also regularly hosts grudge events on the West coast, and has even appeared on Street Outlaws on occasion.

Wullenwaber, meanwhile, has earned some internet street cred over the years with the videos of his insane trip-turbo, diesel-powered Chevrolet Nova. Wullenwaber, armed with plenty of skills of his own for a build like this one, has tabbed Cole and Cody Dow of Dow Brothers Racecars to join his team, adding a dual-threat in the fabrication, welding, and electrical department, and rounding things out with engine builder Ben Bolyan. This is a team that’s readily prepared for a high-stakes build like this, including a driver who knows a thing or two about winner-take-all drag racing.

HW: Tell us a little about yourself

My extended family are the people we race with weekly; most are closer than some directly-related family. Everything I am involved in somehow relates back to making horsepower or getting that adrenaline fix racing. If I am not racing myself, I am working with a group of racing friends and family with their cars, and I travel across the U.S. for major events regularly. We just finished filming in Tucson with Team Boddie for the Street Outlaws live show a few weeks ago. I own the Triple Turbo Diesel Nova, as well as a ’70 Small Tire 598-inch big-block nitrous Nova. My shop, RPM Motorsports, is based on diesel performance and fabrication.

HW: What is your racing background?

I started out street racing in the Bay Area in 1992 and soon after started racing at Sears Point and Sacramento regularly every Wednesday and Saturday night. By ’95 I had started building performance engines for local people to feed my ever-growing need for racing funds. Over the years I have built many race cars for others, including my own. My hobby grew into a business and I’ve never punched a time clock since. Making my hobby a career was the best choice I could have ever made. Ice cream man was my second choice.

HW: Who is part of your team?

Our team include myself, Russ Wullenwaber, a welder, fabricator, engine builder, and driver. Cole Dow is a welder, fabricator, professional driver, and tuner, known as as “Cali Cole.” Cody Dow is an electrical wizard, welder, and fabricator … he’s “the numbers man.” And Ben Bolyan is a tuner and engine builder (Rex Hutchinson Race Engines), and does chassis setup. In our group, Brian is “The Brain.”

HW: What Makes You Qualified For The $10K Drag Shootout?

The four names above have exactly what skills are required to make sure our team comes out on top.

HW: Why should you and you team make the top three finalists?

Our team is in front of the camera quite often with major events including several appearances on Street Outlaws with Team Boddie and Arudda. We will not disappoint the viewers/readers with our competition entry.

HW: Can you share some more details about some of the cars your team has built in the past?

Our group has built a McAmis ’70 Camaro Pro Mod chassis from a pile of tubing in 18 days total. We regularly build, maintain, and improve customer’s vehicles for racing.

Keep an eye out tomorrow as we release the eighth finalist and work our way through the entire lineup of teams that will vie for a shot at this rough-and-tumble build-off!
